Duel Screen

The Duel screen is where you play games in Magic Online. Understanding the Duel screen is important for both enjoying the game and playing well. This help file talks about what each part of the screen does. See Playing a Game to learn about playing games on Magic Online.

Parts of the Duel Screen
The in-play area is where permanents are put. The in-play area is divided into sections for each player.

The cards in your hand are shown across the bottom of your play area.

The players and watchers list tells you who's playing in the game and who's watching. Players' names are in red text and watchers' names are in purple.

The chat area and game log is where you can chat with players and watchers. Game messages also appear here, describing what just happened in the game.

The stack is where spells and abilities wait to resolve after they've been played.

The parts of the turn icons show what phase or step it is and lets you set and remove stops.

The prompt box tells you whose turn it is, what part of the turn it is, what's going on in the game, and has the OK button for you to click to pass priority to the next player.

The card display shows larger images of cards, tokens, and abilities in the game.

The players' status areas show how many cards are in each player's hand, library, and graveyard. It also shows each player's life total and mana pool.

In-Play Area
The in-play area is where permanents are put during a game. The area is divided among you and the other players, with permanents you control in your section of the in-play area and permanents other players control in their own sections.

The active player's section of the in-play area will have a green border around it.

The Display Preferences screen lets you change how your permanents and other players' permanents are shown. You can also change the background on your section of the in-play area.

Sometimes, a player has so many permanents in play that there's not enough room to show them all. You can drag the background of any part of the in-play area to see what's offscreen.

Your Hand
The area just below your part of the game play area shows the cards in your hand.

You can rearrange the cards in your hand by dragging them to a different spot. You can also change what size cards in your hand by changing your Display Preferences.

If you can't see all the cards in your hand, drag the background right or left to see the rest of your cards.

Chat Area and Game Log
The chat area and game log is where players and watchers can chat with each other during play. See Chat for more information.

During a game, messages appear describing what just happened in the game. While the messages don't mention everything in the game, it's a good way to see information about things that you can't see happening. For example, if Bob decides not to take a mulligan, you'll see the message "Bob keeps this hand."

You can use the scroll bar to review chat and game log messages from earlier in a game.

Stack
The stack is where spells and abilities wait to resolve. As spells and abilities are added to the stack, they're placed on top of the stack. You can see the entire text of the spell or ability on top of the stack, and the top edge of each spell or ability below.

If you point to a spell or ability on the stack, you'll see a larger view of it in the card display area. You'll also see arrows pointing to any targets of the spell or ability.

Parts of the Turn
The parts of the turn icons show you what phase or step of the turn it is. The icon for the current phase or step will appear dimmed with its name in yellow.

You can set or remove stops for phases and steps by clicking the phase or step icon. Stops tell the Magic Online game that you always want a chance to play spells and abilities during a particular phase or step. Phases and steps with stops set for them have a red dot on their icons.

There are only two sets of stops: one set for your turn, and one set for all other players' turns. If you use the parts of the turn icons to change stops during your turn, the changes only affect the stops on your turn. If you use the icons to change stops during another player's turn, the changes affect all other players' turns.

To change stops for either your turn or other players' turns at any time, use the options on the Game Preferences screen.

Knowing how to set your stops correctly can have a major impact on game play. For example, if you know you want to play a spell or ability during another player's upkeep step, you won't be able to unless you have a stop set for that step. On the other hand, if you're running out of time in a game, you can save seconds by having fewer stops (you don't have to click OK as much).

Prompt Box
The prompt box tells you when you need to do things during a game (pick targets, pay for X, discard a card, and so on). When the game is waiting for you to do something, the prompt box will have a flashing green outline.

The prompt box also tells you when you have priority to play spells or abilities. If you don't want to play spells or abilities, click OK to pass priority.

Card Display
The card display shows you larger images of cards and tokens on the screen. You can also see larger images of spells and abilities on the stack. Just point at a card or token anywhere on the screen, or a spell or ability on the stack, to show it in the card display.

Players' Status Areas
Each player has a status area along the left side of his or her in-play area. In a player's status area are icons for that player's life total, library, hand, graveyard, and mana pool.

The life total icon shows the player's name, avatar, and life total.
The number on a player's library icon tells you how many cards are left in that player's library.
The number on a player's hand icon tells you how many cards are in that player's hand.
The number on a player's graveyard icon tells you how many cards are in that player's graveyard. Click on the icon to see all cards in a player's graveyard. If you have enough space on your screen, you'll also see the top few cards of a player's graveyard in a special window.
The mana pool shows you how much mana of each color a player has in his or her mana pool. The icons from top to bottom are white, blue, black, red, green, and colorless. The number on a mana symbol shows you how much mana of that color that player has.
